The grants provided not by the a grant applications but by decisions of the board in discussions with scientific teams developing new diagnostics and treatment paradigms.

Type of Corporation: 501c Corporation
Years of experience: 30+ years
Why are clinical trials important?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires closely monitored clinical trials before it can approve a new treatment as safe and effective for public use. The medical profession is constantly searching for new or better treatments for a wide range of illnesses and diseases. The large numbers of discoveries that are made cannot be put into general use until controlled evaluations have been completed with actual patients. The only scientifically valid way that these evaluations can be completed are through clinical trials.

Our History

The PIMR was formed by UCLA Clinical Faculty in 1981 to facilitate conducting research in Neuroscience, Psychiatry and related disciplines. PIMR has raised over $5 million in research grants and donations since 1992. With this resources PIMR conducted or facilitated over 100 of studies in the field of Clinical Psychopharmacology and neuroscience. Many of current pharmacological agents or devices for the treatment of anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, migraine and Alzheimer’s disease were developed with the help of PIMR.

Currently PIMR is actively participating in research. PIMR partners with the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation to facilitate the research in consciousness. PIMR is actively conducting Clinical Trials:

Example of clinical trials where the PIMR is a site: https://www.pcori.org/research-results/2016/comparing-three-treatments-adults-major-depression-does-not-respond-first-line

This trial is conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. George Papacostas is the PI on this grant and Alexander Bystritsky is the PI for PIMR. The study is comparing different treatment strategies for the Treatment Resistant Depression.

During her work at UCLA, she rose through the ranks as a rater, manager, and finally investigator in numerous clinical trials. Around the same time, Dr. Vapnik started working as a Principal Investigator at Pacific Institute of Medical Research.
